Touring Production

The Book of Mormon: the touring chain-hoist rigging package, on long-term hire.

The Book of Mormon - touring

02 Challenge

A flying rig that has to go up fast and safe in a different venue every stop, land on the same cues, and hold through a long Australia and New Zealand run.

03 What we did

Supplied the chain-hoist flying package on long-term hire - around 40 EXE Rise hoists, controllers, pendants and rigging hardware - with the TSA crew that rigs it in every venue.

04 Outcome

One rigging package, hired and crewed, flying the show reliably across the Australia and New Zealand tour.

01 The Problem

The rigging has to be right in a room the crew has never worked.

A show like The Book of Mormon lives on the move. The same flying rig that hangs the show in one proscenium one week has to strike, travel, and go back up in a different venue the next - and fly the scenery to exactly the same cues, every time.

That is where a touring production feels the pressure. The hoists carry live load over performers, show after show. The rigging has to be right in a room the crew has never worked before. And the whole package has to load in, run, and load out on a schedule that does not bend.

The brief was straightforward: supply a flying package the production could hire for the length of the tour, and put a crew behind it that rigs the same way in every venue - so the show tours on rigging it can trust.

02 The Process

Specify. Hire. Rig every venue.

i

The flying package

The work started with the flying plot. TSA specified the hoists to the show's rigging points - around 40 EXE Rise chain hoists in a mix of 500 kg and 1-tonne, with spares - then matched them to 8-way and 16-way controllers, pendants and control looms. The rig that hangs the show, sized to the show.

ii

Long-term hire

TSA hired the package to the production on a long-term cycle, not a show-by-show rental - so the same hoists, controllers and hardware travel with the production for the length of the run. Soft-steel slings, bow shackles, Hercules master links and TRAC chain, all supplied and tracked as one kit. One specification, one point of accountability.

iii

On-tour support

Touring is where the package proves itself. A TSA rigging crew loads in the hoists at each venue, hangs the rig to the plot, and handles the transfers between cities. Every venue rigged to the same documented standard, so the show flies the same way in a new room as it did in the last one.

03 The Result

One package. Built to keep touring.

The Book of Mormon tours on one hired rigging package - around 40 hoists, the controllers and hardware to run them, and a TSA crew behind them. Specified, supplied and crewed by one team, so there is no seam between the kit and the people who rig it.

That is what lets a production tour with confidence. The rig strikes, travels, and goes back up the same way in every venue, and TSA stays behind it for the length of the hire to keep it show-ready.
