What a scrim is

Light does the work.
We make the canvas.

A scrim is a loose-weave stage gauze that reads as a solid painted surface when lit from the front, and turns transparent when the light moves behind it. That switch is what lands a reveal on a cue: the scene in front holds, then dissolves to show what was always there. For it to read clean in front of an audience, the weave has to be right, the tension even, and the cut precise.

We manufacture sharkstooth gauze, voile and sheer made-to-measure to suit your rig, flame retarded to AS 1530 standards with the documentation in the bag, and built to hang on the bars and rigging you already have, ready for bump-in. Not sure which weave the cue needs? Spec it in the Drape Selector.

The same sharkstooth scrim lit from the front, reading as a near-solid surface with only a faint silhouette of the performer behind it

Front-lit, it holds. Back-lit, it vanishes. A performer behind sharkstooth gauze reads solid front-lit and transparent back-lit. The effect depends on weave, tension and lighting design.

The range

Three weaves,
three jobs.

Sharkstooth is the reveal workhorse. Voile softens the light for haze and projection. Sheer is the most translucent layer for atmosphere. Pick a weave to see how it reads under light.

Sharkstooth · IFR or treated

The reveal workhorse.

Open diamond mesh: fine enough to read as a solid painted surface when lit from the front, open enough to go around 70% transparent when the light moves behind it. This is the cloth that lands a scene-change reveal on a lighting cue. Woven wide, so broad drops hang with no seam.

Open diamond mesh·IFR or treated·Wide drops, no seam·~70% transparent back-lit

Voile · Sheer

Soft light, haze and projection.

A sheer, not a gauze: finer and lighter than sharkstooth, softer and hazier, around 85% transparent back-lit. It creates diffusion, makes drapes, and takes a lighting colourwash beautifully. Spec it for soft-light scenes, ghost and dream effects, and as a front or rear projection surface where partial transparency is part of the design. Handles cleanly and stores flat in a purpose-built bag sized to the drop.

~55 g/m² sheer·Takes a colourwash beautifully·~85% transparent back-lit

Sheer · Lightest weave

Maximum transparency.

The lightest, most translucent weave in the range. Spec it for soft-light scenes, atmospheric depth layers, and projection surfaces where the audience needs to read through the cloth. Made-to-measure and engineered to take a clean wash of light without hot-spotting, flame retarded to the same AS 1530 standards as the rest of the range.

Every weave is made-to-measure to suit your rig, flame retarded to AS 1530 standards with the documentation supplied, sized to hang on your existing bars and rigging, and available with a custom storage bag sized to the drop.
